The American tradition for a happy couple about to get married is to pick out nice sets of cutlery and dishes from the store to add to the gift registry so their friends and family can easily purchase these items as gifts for their wedding.

The married couple is so eager to receive them...and then safely store them away only to be used for entertaining or special event. They end up purchasing a cheaper set of dishes and cutlery for everyday use.

In the past decades, entertaining has become more relaxed and casual, so these beautiful China sets are not needed. The sets are held on and then pass down to their children, which will not be used because they have their set that they like better. The guilt will make it difficult for them to let go, and will become clutter. And so thus the continued accumulation of several sets of fine dishes that are forever stored away and not used.

Does this sound familiar to you? Do you have dishes from your wedding gift stored away because you thought they were too nice to use? If you put in the effort to pick out  these dishes and your friends and family are willing to gift them to you, why not use them? Aren’t you worth it? If you would like to part with them, you can sell or give someone else the chance to enjoy them.

One way of simplifying your life is to use what you already have in your possession. If you have fine dishes (yes, even China), use them. If you think you will break them, so what? Life is short. Give yourself a break and enjoy the fine stuff. Dishes are made to be used, not stored away, so use them and enjoy them.  This is the best way to make sure the set is not cluttered but valued.
